A sports lighting project needs a clear brief before it needs a fixture count. Identify the sport, the level of play and the people using the venue. Training, recreational play, competition and broadcast use can have different requirements; the appropriate governing documents must be checked for the actual project.
Agree the level of play and the measurement basis
Ask the venue operator which regulations, competition requirements and local rules apply. Record how performance will be calculated and checked. Avoid selecting a target merely because another venue uses it.
The DarkSky outdoor sports lighting guidelines distinguish classes of play and refer to applicable lighting criteria and local codes. They are guidance for that specific programme.
Map the whole playing area
Provide a scaled plan showing the playing surface, run-off areas, tracks, stands and other uses of the site. Include existing pole positions and their heights. For a tennis court, describe the court and surrounding movement areas. For a field with a running track, identify which zones operate together and which need separate control.
Photographs help explain the setting; dimensions and calculations define the design. The photographs in MINGYUAN’s project pages show different venue arrangements.

Consider player sightlines and neighbours
Discuss where players, officials and spectators will look during use. Ask the designer to review luminaire aiming and glare alongside coverage. Include nearby homes, roads and boundaries in the brief so that spill light can be considered from the outset.
These questions should be resolved with the optical arrangement and mounting geometry, rather than by choosing the largest available wattage. A technical proposal needs the selected configuration’s photometric data and documented assumptions.
Plan operation and maintenance
Describe training hours, match use and any different operating modes. Check access to equipment and the responsibilities for future maintenance. Connected controls are one possible tool for managing sports lighting, as illustrated in Signify’s sports lighting overview; any proposed system still needs its own compatibility and scope review.
Ask for a proposal you can verify
The MINGYUAN catalogue includes SLD and FLD families that can be considered during selection for a new brief. Request the actual configuration schedule, calculation report and relevant technical documents.
